Getting Around the Street of Dreams

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Whether you’re traveling from a nearby neighborhood or visiting from out of state, there are plenty of simple, stress-free ways to get to and around the NW Natural Street of Dreams in the Pearl District.

The four featured buildings are relatively close to one another and easily accessible in the city’s most walkable neighborhood. Of course, you don’t want to miss any of the sights, sounds or tasts along the way, so once you’re in the district, the best way to get around is on foot.

But if you prefer a little assistance, it’s easily accessible:

Street of Dreams shuttle (FREE): A free shuttle for Pearl Pass holders will loop around the district every 15 minutes during show hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Portland Streetcar (FREE): Your Street of Dreams ticket doubles as a pass to ride the Portland Streetcar throughout August – a great option for short hops around the neighborhood and downtown. Visit www.portlandstreetcar.org for more information and route map.

Tri-Met buses: Several Tri-Met lines serve the Pearl District. For information, trip planning assistance and route maps, visit www.trimet.org.

Amtrak: Union Station is a Pearl icon and a convenient point of entry for visitors from Seattle, Eugene and beyond. Visit www.amtrak.com for more information about fares and schedules.

An Uncommon Life Created With My Fellow Designer Richard Rolfe

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Guest Post by Kimberleejaynes.com, designer of “An Uncommon Life” in The Encore.

The Street of Dreams opens Saturday to the public, the gala is this evening and it is all very exciting! Richard Rolfe (he goes by Rolfe) and I have been designing the unit together and working for the last two months non-stop to create a haven from the outside world. Rolfe is a VERY talented designer who has added touches that I would not have thought of! We have had a very fun time and I look forward to designing more projects with Rolfe.

Below is an excerpt from today’s H&G section and it features one of Rolfe’s many special touches shown in the photo above.

The Oregonian H&G section-LAYERED LUXE
“When Kimberlee Jaynes Interior Design (working with Madison Millinger) finished at The Encore, each room hit a textured, sophisticated note. In the guest bedroom, the space between the elaborately dressed daybed and the closet-turned-office became a vignette reminiscent of world travel with a miniature mannequin decked in ropes of beads and a doll-size chair stacked with books. ”

Some of the comments we have heard from visitors is that it is so soothing and restful.

You can purchase tickets at Safeway or Street of Dreams headquarters at the 937. When you buy a ticket it is actually a pass that gets you into the condos for a full month so you don’t have to view them all at once and the pass is good for all kinds of dollars off on restaurants and services!

Hope you have a chance to go take a look at all of the penthouses to see what the many talented designers have created.

Urban Street of Dreams Creates Unique Challenges for Interior Designer

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

This guest blog was written by Angela Todd Designs, who is designing unit 1606 at the Encore for this year’s Street of Dreams.

This year’s urban Northwest Natural Street of Dreams in Portland has many unique challenges not seen in past years shows because of the location and nature of the featured homes.

What door was it? The project requires meeting many vendors at the penthouse to see the space, take measurements, make plans and install their goods. As silly as it sounds I have taken it for granted in a typical show house that vendors can simply meet me at the house. I don’t have to mention the main door and I certainly don’t have to go down 16 floors to let them into the building. Oh, okay. They can call me and I can buzz them in, but I haven’t bothered to remember to use the intercom system even once yet. Don’t ask.

What is that room for anyway? Like most desirable urban environments, square footage in the Pearl district is at a premium. Past years have featured larger than life homes with many rooms with unique purposes including wine cellars, media rooms, indoor swimming pools, and work out facilities. The 1606 penthouse I am designing in the Encore is a little shy of 2500 square feet. With less than a third of the square footage of past homes featured, we find ourselves being creative about multi-purposing rooms and selecting furniture with flexibility in living. You will love our Zen like room, part yoga studio, part home office.

What is behind that wall anyway? Unlike past years, the penthouses were also pre-built with the architectural firms and developers, so wiring, electrical, surfaces and cabinetry selections were already determined and installed. Changes don’t come easy with lighting and wiring when a wall is solid concrete construction. We have found ourselves being creative with surround sound and placement of chandeliers in our unit. There is only a few inches access above the unit’s ceiling, so even dropping a cable can become an impossible ordeal in some areas of the penthouse.

That is simple, right? I have dreamed up a few design ideas that have proved to be very challenging. My favorite was working with a Culver Glass to install mirrors on a focal wall. The estimator looked at me and scratched his head. Then said, “What floor are we on Angela?” I said, “The 16th, why do you ask?” He said he would need a crane to bring the full size 4’x12’ panels up to the unit. We later settled for bringing the panels up on top of the elevator. I still don’t understand how that worked, but it did.

Views, views and more views. Our penthouse has an astounding view of the West Hills, Freemont Bridge, Mount Hood and the Willamette River. Everywhere you look there are windows. That is a good thing indeed. The windows are sleek and metal. That is a good thing too, but some of the window treatment ideas we dreamed up weren’t practical. Mounting hardware on metal windows will void the warranty of the windows. We went to plan B instead. (Don’t worry you will love it.)

You can’t put that there! Our penthouse features an outdoor covered lanai that transitions into two long, slender patios aligning the unit. (Imagine the letter “T” upside down) We imagined comfortable yet contemporary patio furnishings alongside foliage and dreamed up a fountain and a fireplace. Well, the fire marshall didn’t agree with my design plan underneath a covered area, and the fountain didn’t meet drainage requirements. Still, the patio layout will still blow your socks off.

Speaking of socks, this year all visitors will be given a bag to carry their shoes into the unit. By the way, the Encore building is LEED certified silver, so in addition to having a smaller footprint in this years Street of Dreams, you can do you part by reusing your bag for shopping around town after the show.

It opens tomorrow and it’s the first of its kind in the Nation. Come see the first urban Street of Dreams this August in the Portland Pearl District. Buy tickets here. We can’t wait to introduce you to outstanding design ideas, cascading views, innovative technology, and all that urban living in the Pearl has to offer.

Interior Design Tips for Do-It-Yourselfers

Friday, July 24th, 2009

This guest blog was written by Angela Todd Designs, who is designing unit 1606 at the Encore for this year’s Street of Dreams.

I can’t count the number of times a client of mine has shown me a past year’s Street of Dream photos to illustrate a style or piece they want in their own home. They loved it. They photographed it. They want that look.

This is how the Street of Dreams is known. It is a concept home showcasing the best of the best, the newest trends and fashions. Albeit, out of the home price point for the average homeowner, but full of innovative design and decorating ideas for just about anyone.

As designers we know it doesn’t always cost a fortune to achieve great design. Here are some great tips if you are a do-it-yourselfer:
*Inspiration Start with a great inspiration. It should be something that speaks to you. It may be a piece of artwork, a lamp, your sofa or even something not in your room. Build your room with that inspiration as a starting point.
*Colors Blend your colors with tints, tones and shades. An exact match is great, but great design varies the color.
*Three Think in thirds and 3’s. Here are examples. Choose three main colors that you ratio to a pleasing number. For example 60%, 30% and 10%. Place your accessories in odd number groupings too – you can accessorize with over 3 items, but keep in odd number groupings.. Try a piece over your sofa that is approximately 2/3 in width of the sofa size, or group artwork to achieve that size. Repeat a style and color at least 3 times in your room. If you like eclectic style, (blending several styles) try the 60%, 30%, 10% ratio again.
*Wall finish Your wall color shouldn’t be the first thing you pick in your room. No kidding. There are thousands of choices in fabrics, case goods, lighting, area rugs and artwork. Don’t over complicate decorating by limiting yourself to one shade of green.
*Texture Don’t be afraid of blending textures and patterns. It is what creates a room with depth and interest.
*Windows Don’t forget your windows. They need dressing too. If you are installing drapery panels try 1/3 of the windows width on each side. We are back to that third rule again aren’t we?
*Ask Know when you need help and call in a designer or contractor to help you. Time is precious and we are trained to learn about you, what your needs are, and how we can help you get there. The Home builders Association is full of great, reputable home builders, remodelers, interior designers and experts in every area of home improvement. We’d love to help.

Save $10 off lunch or dinner (with purchase of $25 or more, happy hour not included) with your Pearl Pass at Ten-01!!

by Christina Melander, from The Oregonian

With his gap-toothed grin and crisp black button-down shirt, Ten-01’s 25-year-old bar manager, Kelley Swenson (see video here), straddles the line between geek chic and Tom Cruise razzmatazz. Though his signature concoctions ($8-$10) often feature distinguished ingredients such as homemade grenadine, celery bitters and Ramazzotti amaro, Swenson’s bar-side manner is affable and humble. He describes his drinks simply, revealing that many are named for racehorses just because they have cool monikers, then steps aside to shake cocktails two at a time. It’s an impressive bit of theater, but it’s not overdone. The resulting elixirs, a gemlike collection of amber, citrine and ruby hues, stand out for their surprising but balanced flavor profiles. Anise-punctuated aquavit with lemon and kaffir lime may not seem like natural collaborators, but the earthy, fresh-spring taste of Turn to the Prince makes a convincing argument that they belong together.

Rest of the day: Ten-01’s kitchen is in transition. New chef Benjamin Parks, just now putting his stamp on the menu, embraces more delicate flavors than heralded former chef Jack Yoss. The bar menu retains old favorites like the $11 cheeseburger and whopping bowl of truffle fries ($8), and introduces wafer-thin potato chips as an addictive chicken liver dipper; perfectly crunchy-oozy arancini; and super-tasty mac ‘n’ cheese, recently larded with lamb, peas and pea shoots. The popular Power Lunch still offers an appetizer, entree and petite dessert for $15 (add a martini or manhattan for just $4). Happy hour offers downsized cheeseburgers for $5, one-buck oysters, a $6 cheese plate and those crazy-good truffle fries for $6.
